Diagnostic and therapeutic services
Vital support for blood transfusion, organ and stem cell transplantation
These specialist services provide:
Red Cell Immunohaematology
Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) ensures the safety and clinical efficacy of red cell transfusion therapy by providing expert diagnostic and donation selection activities. RCI also provides diagnostic support for a range of haemolytic conditions affecting fetuses, newborns and adults.
Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics
Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) services deploy state of the art genomics to match organ, stem cell and platelet donors to the requirements of individual patients H&I’s consultant clinical scientists work as part of hospital multi-disciplinary teams, advising on donor selection and patient management.
International Blood Group Reference Laboratory
International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL) investigates highly complex transfusion incompatibility problems. The laboratory also provides a range of non-invasive tests for establishing the blood group status of fetuses in normal and high risk pregnancies. Specialist reagents are provided for research and diagnostics.
Cellular and Molecular Therapies
Our Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT) facilities are licensed by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). They offer a range of established and innovative cell therapies for the treatment of inherited and acquired haematological disorders. CMT’ s Clinical Biotechnology Centre manufactures DNA-based therapeutics for clinical application.
Stem Cell Donation and Transplantation
Stem Cell Donation and Transplantation (SCDT) includes the NHS Cord Blood Bank and the NHS Stem Cell Donor Registry. Working in partnership with Anthony Nolan, SCDT provides stem cells from unrelated donors for the treatment of inherited and acquired haematological disorders.
Therapeutic Apheresis Services
