Prasharnie's story
I have been working for NHSBT since November 2000. I applied for the role after seeing an advert in the New Scientist magazine and the job description really appealed to me. I started work in a supervisory role within what was then the London Cord Blood Bank. This involved assisting the manager with collections and consents at Northwick Park and Barnet hospitals, training new staff and some staff management duties.
During my time with the Cord Bank I have become a team manager and I am responsible for my own collection site.
When a baby is born, the blood that is left in the placenta and the umbilical cord is rich in stem cells. The NHS Cord Blood Bank gains consent from interested mothers to collect this blood and offer it as a viable alternative to bone marrow transplants. We work closely with doctors and midwives to promote ourselves within the hospitals where we are based. This is an amazing opportunity for mothers to help someone else.
