NHS Blood and Transplant explain the science of blood groups during a new documentary 'Michael Mosley: Wonders of the Human Body'
NHS Blood and Transplant will explain the science of blood groups at its stunning Bristol blood processing site in a new documentary.
We’ll be featured in the second episode of 'Wonders of the Human Body', presented by the late Dr Michael Mosley, which will be broadcast on Channel 5 at 8pm on Thursday 29 August.
During the episode, NHSBT’s Medical Director for Transfusion Dr Lise Estcourt shows blood donor Meshach Snape around the NHSBT Filton blood manufacturing hall.
Dr Lise Estcourt explains the importance of blood components such as plasma and platelets and how blood is tested and treated. They talk through how blood needs to be matched, using samples in the Research and Development lab in the Bristol Institute of Transfusion Sciences, which is based at Filton. The lab grows red blood cells for the world-leading RESTORE trial.
Donor Meshach was featured because he has Ro type blood, which is particularly needed as a match to treat people with sickle cell disorder.
The documentary team filmed NHSBT’s transport team bringing blood from across the region to Filton overnight.
Channel 5 said 'Wonders of the Human Body' explores ‘the latest science and medical innovation, delving inside our bodies to reveal the extraordinary marvels which lie within’.
The series will also feature a special tribute to Dr Mosely by his wife Dr Clare Bailey, following his death while out walking on the Greek island of Symi this summer.
