Manufacture and Clinical Assessment of Cultured Red Cells
Director of the BTRU: Professor Ash M Toye
Chief Investigator: Dr Cédric Ghevaert
Location/Institution: University of Bristol, in collaboration with the University of Warwick, the University of Bath and the University of the West of England
Funder: National Insititute for Health Research (NIHR)
NHSBT Research Theme: Red Blood Cell Products
Summary
The key aim of this BTRU is to establish whether novel approaches to growing red blood cells from adult stem cells could help people who require regular blood transfusion by reducing the frequency of transfusion, reducing the treatment burden for patients and the unwanted side effects of frequent transfusions. This will involve a clinical trial in healthy volunteers in the first instance.
