Current research

Our Research Governance Office supports a portfolio of research which is funded across a number of streams; both internal and external to NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). Our current research is closely linked to our wider R&D strategy and operational requirements.

COVID-19 BioResource

NHSBT and partners have created a BioResource of plasma samples related to COVID-19, this has been established to support researchers.

NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Units (BTRUs)

NIHR BTRUs are multidisciplinary centres of excellence, and support the needs of NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) for research to improve the supply of blood, blood products, stem cells and tissues.

Core funded research

We provide core funds to our Principal Investigators through renewable five year programmes of work prepared in conjunction with NHSBT Research Strategy Groups. Over the past five years, this approach has increased alignment with operational requirements and improved translation of results into service delivery.
