Storing tissue safely
We provide tissue in various formats
We recommend that all tissue grafts be stored in secure locations with access restricted to designated personnel. The expiry date for the grafts is either indicated on the pack label, or accompanying paperwork. Grafts must not be used after their expiry date.
To store frozen or cryopreserved tissues, you will need a suitable freezer. For frozen tissues, the expiry date will be determined by the type of freezer available. When you place your order, we will ask you for the temperature of the freezer you are intending to use, to ensure the correct labelling and expiry date is printed on the product prior to supply. We recommend that the temperature of the freezer be recorded, and that it be linked to an alarm system that is monitored 24/7.
Detailed guidance on how to store grafts and prepare them for implantation is provided with each graft.
Frozen
Frozen tissue must be stored in a dedicated alarmed freezer that reliably operates below maximum permissible storage temperature. This will either be below -20°C or below -40°C.
Cryopreserved
Cryopreserved tissue is supplied in dry ice (-79°C) and must be stored in a dedicated -80°C freezer.
Room temperature
Some tissue does not require specialised storage facilities and can be stored at room temperature. However, we recommend that it be stored in a location where it will not be exposed to direct sunlight and away from significant heat sources. This includes freeze dried bone grafts, dCELL® Human Dermis and sclera. Cornea grafts may also be stored at room temperature for a short period prior to implantation.
