About IBGRL


International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL) comprises several NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) laboratories at Filton in Bristol, England.

IBGRL was established in 1946 to provide reference services and reagents related to blood transfusion to the transfusion community. Our main functions include:

  • maintaining a rare blood donor database via the web: the International Rare Donor Panel
  • generating of a range of monoclonal antibodies and soluble recombinant proteins which are commercially available around the world as IBGRL Research Products
  • providing specialist clinical diagnostic services which include serology and genotyping
  • maintaining a distinguished record of research and development in blood transfusion science
  • accreditation, e.g. UKAS and ISO13485
