Cord Blood Donation
With your help, we can provide a life-saving product from something that is normally thrown away.
Following the suspension of our cord blood collection services we have now re-opened our collection sites with the exception of Royal Free London - Barnet.
We are currently operating a limited service, in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all donors, trust staff and our staff whilst providing a life improving service.
By donating your cord blood after the birth of your baby you could save someone's life.
The NHS Cord Blood Bank opened in 1996 and is the world`s fourth largest public cord blood bank. It is also has the second highest proportion of rare tissues types in the world.
The bank has over 22,000 cord blood units banked from mothers who have generously donated cord blood taken from the placenta and umbilical cord after the birth of a baby, which otherwise would have been discarded. 16,000 of these are suitable for clinical transplant whilst the remainder are available for research into new cell therapies. Thanks to their gift, many lives have been saved by stem cells from a donation of cord blood.
