Amy's Story

"I was unable to make any blood for myself"

Amy was diagnosed with Very Severe Aplastic Anaemia - a disease that caused her bone marrow to fail and left her unable to produce any blood cells. "I was completely dependent on blood donations. As my disease got progressively worse I had about 40 platelet transfusions, 20 bags of blood and 30 bags of granulocytes (a type of white blood cell)."

Amy has now had a bone marrow transplant and hopes never to need a bag of blood again. "I don't want to think about what would have happened if I hadn't been able to get the vital blood I needed – every single one of those transfusions kept me going until I finally had the bone marrow transplant – three months after my initial diagnosis. It's an amazing gift when someone donates."
