Dried plasma
Dried plasma: Building a UK capability for rapid, life-saving transfusion
Project aim
The UK spray‑dried plasma programme is developing a resilient, rapidly deployable plasma product to transform trauma care in military, prehospital, and civilian emergency settings.
Led by NHS Blood and Transplant in collaboration with commercial and defence partners, the programme has demonstrated that dried plasma can be stored at ambient temperature, reconstituted within minutes and preserves coagulation in vitro.
Having recently been granted a license to produce dried plasma as the purpose-designed facility in the Cambridge donor centre, the next phase of the project will focus on clinical evaluation in a relevant patient population with the future aim to supply to the Ministry of Defence and UK hospitals for use in management of major bleeding subject to regulatory approvals.
Project funding and support
This project is supported by the UK Ministry of Defence funding and NHS investment.
