National survey of neonatal exchange blood transfusion

Reference: TF023
Title: National Survey of Neonatal Exchange Blood Transfusion (EBT)
Chief investigator: Dr Helen New

Summary

High levels of bilirubin - the substance which causes jaundice - may occur in newborn babies, especially with certain blood group incompatibilities between the mother and baby.

Very high bilirubin levels can cause brain damage and require prompt treatment with phototherapy (light) or occasionally Exchange Blood Transfusion (EBT).

EBTs are relatively uncommon and the study aims to describe the current rate of difficulties and the outcomes. The results of this survey will be used to improve guidelines.
